Students' Union Print E-mail

The Students' Union is a democratic organisation that, in essence, is run by students for students. The Students' Union receives a yearly grant from the University to run a number of services for all students studying at the University of Hertfordshire and HIBT. The services available include a programme of social entertainment and activities, running of the student restaurants and bars, a full group of clubs and societies and help and advice with specific issues.

Social Events and Activities

The Students' Union offer a monthly programme of events and activities, some for free and others with a small entry or participation fee. These events ensure that students have plenty of social activities available so that they can experience student culture in the UK, settle in to the University environment and make new friends. For further information about the latest events being held by the Students' Union, please visit the events website at: http://uhsu.herts.ac.uk/ents/index.php

Student Restaurants and Bars

There are many options available on campus at the University of Hertfordshire and also many restaurants in the local area offer cheap deals for University of Hertfordshire and HIBT students. Some examples of the on campus options are listed below:

De Havilland Sports and Social Club, Hatfield

Constructed in August 2003, the Sports and Social Club on campus was originally an exclusive members only club. However, due to popularity and demand every student is now automatically a member and can enjoy the use of the two large bars, snooker room, pool tables and the opportunity to watch sport, obviously, on the screens within.

The Elehouse - UHSU Hatfield

The first of the Student Union's two venues on campus, the Elehouse is named so due to its design by the same architect who built the Elephant House at London Zoo! Open daily from 11 am to 11 pm this is basically the 'local pub on campus'. Inside you will find not only comfy sofas, big screen TVs, pool tables and lively bar staff, but also the Student Union's Lettings Office and Employment Office. Food is served all day every day. Bacon and Egg rolls highly recommended.

The Font Bar - UHSU Hatfield

The jewel in the Students' Union's crown is the Font Bar, which is open until 1 am every night of the week with the exception of Sundays. It offers a different selection of music every night, from cheesy chart, to R&B, to alternative style rock and metal. The interior is modern, comprising of two large bars, a raised seating area, a dance floor and a dedicated sound and lighting system. For an example of some of the big name acts that we have housed in the past please visit www.uhsu.herts.ac.uk for more details.

UH Refectories - Hatfield Campuses

Both UH refectories serve hot and cold foods until mid afternoon and they are the backbone of the student working day. With different menus every day, and ensured catering for vegetarians, the variety is more impressive than you would expect a canteen to be. Students can choose from a variety of different foods including big English breakfasts, fish and chips, stir-fry's, chips, pastries, salads, sandwiches, pizza, baked potato and much more. The refectories on the College Lane Campus include a sandwich bar, a fast food outlet and a coffee shop.

Clubs and societies

At HIBT we always encourage our students to register with any clubs and societies that interest them - it is a great way to get involved in student life and to widen your circle of like minded friends. Clubs and societies include: American Football, Aikido, Basketball, Badminton, Canoeing, Cricket, Debating, Golf, Karate, Hockey, Horse Riding, Music societies, Religious societies, Rowing, Rugby, and Wu Shu Kwan. This Centre offers a different kind of support as it is run by students. The Centre is open from Monday to Friday 10 am - 4 pm, Thursday Night 5 pm - 7 pm, by appointment only.
