Hatfield and the county of Hertfordshire

HIBT is located on the main campus of the University of Hertfordshire in the town of Hatfield, which has excellent shopping and recreational facilities and very good transportation links to the rest of the UK. It is especially well located for travel to London, connecting to the London orbital motorway, the M25, and is only 25 minutes by train to central London's King's Cross tube and rail station

Hatfield - an historic town

Hatfield is an historical town, dating back to Saxon times. The settlement grew to importance as a coaching town. With the arrival of the railway in 1850, the municipality developed rapidly and in the 1930's its further growth was linked to the aviation industry. The Hatfield of today is very modern, but Old Hatfield, at its heart, still retains a village feel.

Old Hatfield is also the site of the magnificent Hatfield House. Built by Robert Cecil in 1611, the fascinating Jacobean mansion contains the surviving wing of the original Royal Palace of Hatfield where Elizabeth I spent most of her childhood. The house and its beautiful grounds are open to the public.

Hatfield - new industry and development

Until recently Hatfield was the Headquarters of British Aerospace and was where de Havilland developed the World's first jet plane. The Hatfield aerodrome has since been redeveloped and now features a Business Park, which is home to many high tech and service industries, and the new University of Hertfordshire de Havilland Campus. The old aerodrome has also been used as a film set and many of the Steven Spielberg productions like Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers were filmed there. The beautiful and lively city of St Albans is nearby and is a popular destination for students in their free time.
