Undergraduate Pathway Programme - Science and Engineering

Course Description

The HIBT University Pathway Programme in Science and Engineering prepares students for entry into the 2nd Year at the University of Hertfordshire. Students are able to transfer to the 2nd Year in a wide range of undergraduate Science and Engineering degrees on successful completion of their Diploma Level. The HIBT Pathway ensures that students have the necessary background knowledge to succeed in the undergraduate degree programme of their choice. The University of Hertfordshire’s close collaboration with industrial partners such as Accenture, Airbus, BMW, GlaxoSmithKline, McLaren Cars, Microsoft, Premier EDA Solutions, Rolls Royce and Sony means that the University’s degrees are relevant to many employment opportunities.

School of Aerospace Automotive and Design Engineering

At the School of Aerospace, Automotive and Design Engineering, programmes have been professionally accredited by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and The Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS). Placement companies include Airbus, BMW, Lockheed Martin, McLaren Cars, MBDA, Nissan and Rolls Royce. Similarly, nearly every Formula 1 racing team employs a graduate from the School which also enjoys champion successes in the IMechE Formula Student and the University Class of the Le Mans 24-hour Karting competitions. The School incorporates a multitude of state-of-the art resources, inclusive of a flight simulator; machine shop; a range of laboratories for aerodynamics, control systems and hydraulics, thermodynamics and propulsion; advanced equipment for materials testing; and computing suites. Aerospace students have access to the Stapleford Flight Centre in Essex for PPL training whilst Automotive students have access to the University’s new £500k high-tech Automotive Centre.

School of Electronic, Communication and Electrical Engineering

The School of Electronic, Communication and Electrical Engineering programmes have been professionally accredited by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), for a continuous period of 25 years. It also boasts an Industry Advisory Group with members from Sony, Qmara, Raytheon, MBDA, Premier EDA Solutions, Nortel Networks, and Soundcraft, with the majority of these companies also sponsoring annual student prizes of around £7k. Industry sponsored laboratories include a System-on-Chip lab sponsored by Premier EDA and Altium as well as a Games and Graphics Hardware lab sponsored by Sony, Microsoft and Soundcraft.

School of Computer Science

The School of Computer Science’s programmes are accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS). One of the largest and most established Schools of its kind in the UK, placement companies include Accenture, GlaxoSmithKline and Sun Microsystems. In addition, the School offers an optional industrial certification with Cisco CCNA. The School accesses 13 computing laboratories all of which are equipped with modern hardware and software including specialist facilities for networking and multimedia.

School of Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics

The School of Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics programmes are accredited by The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), The Institute of Analysts and Programmers (AIP) and The Institute of Physics (IoP). The School’s Observatory at Bayfordbury is widely regarded as the best in the country and is host to the new Science Learning Centre (East of England) as well as being attached to one of the largest astronomy research groups in the UK.
